STEP #10 GET AN IDENTIFYING NUMBER If you are the sole proprietor of the business and have no employees, you may either use your Social Security number or an Employee Identification Number (EIN) as the business number on official forms. If you have employees, or the business is set up as a partnership or corporation, you must obtain an EIN. To do this, complete IRS Form SS-4 (Application for Employer Identification Number) and file it with the nearest IRS Center. STEP #11 OBTAIN A SALES TAX PERMIT If the product or service you sell is taxable, you need a state sales tax permit. Call the local tax agency, explain the type of business you have and what you sell, and ask if you need to collect sales tax. If you do, they will send you the necessary information and forms to complete. You also use this tax number when your purchase items for resale. STEP #12 OBTAIN LICENSES & PERMITS It’s very important not to overlook any necessary license or permit. For example, some cities and counties require a general business license, and most have special laws regarding the preparation and sale of food. Call City Hall to find out what is need for your particular business. In addition, Chamber of Commerce provide information on city, county and state licenses and permits. STEP #13 SELECT BUSINESS CARDS, STATIONERY, BROCHURES Spend time on the color, design and paper for these items. They make a definite impression-good or bad- on the people who receive them. If you are not certain what is most suitable and effective, consult a graphics designer or a creative printer whose work you like. STEP #14 OPEN A BUSINESS CHECKING ACCOUNT Call several banks to find out what services they offer, and what minimum balance, if any, must be maintained to avoid paying a service charge. Also ask about credit card if you plan to offer this convenience to your customers. Bank fees can be significant, so shop around for the best deal. If your personal checking account is with a credit union, see if it can also provide a separate business account. when you open your account, you may need to show the assumed name certificate and business license. Finally, investigate obtaining a credit card in the business’s name. If this is not possible, set aside a personal credit card to use for business expenses. STEP #15 SET UP RECORD-KEEPING SYSTEMS Put together a simple and effective bookkeeping system with an 8 1/2 x 11″ three-ring binder, columnar pad sheets and twelve pocket dividers from the office supply store. For each month, set up columnar sheets for income and expenses. Use a pocket divider for each month’s receipts, bank statement, deposit tickets, and canceled checks. In addition, an automobile log for business mileage, and filing system for correspondence, invoices, supplier catalogs, client records, etc. are two other useful tools. For more information on record-keeping, see IRS publication #583, Information for Business taxpayers. STEP #16 CHECK IRS REQUIREMENTS If you comply with basic IRS guidelines, you can deduct a percentage of normal household expenses (mortgage, interest, taxes, insurance, utilities, repairs, etc.) as a business expense. see the box accompanying this article and, for more detailed information, IRS publication #587, Business Use of the Home. Also become familiar with these IRS forms: Schedule SE (compensation of Social Security Self-Employment Tax) and Schedule 1040 ES (estimated Tax for Individuals). Depending on circumstances, you may have to file them. STEP #17 OUTFIT THE BUSINESS Make a list of everything needed to start the business, but before you buy anything, look around the house for things you already own that are usable. When you are ready to start purchasing, check the classified ads and garage sales. Both are good, inexpensive sources for office furniture, typewriters, computers, answering machines, etc. But only what is absolutely necessary for start-up, and wait until the business is off the ground to get the extras. STEP #18 DECIDE ON TELEPHONE REQUIREMENTS Call the telephone company to find out the cost of a business phone in your area. If you cannot afford a separate business line, investigate the telephone company’s regulations on using your personal phone in a business. It may be possible to do this if you follow certain guidelines. Keep a record of long distance business calls as they are a deductible expense. Finally, consider the benefits of an answering machine to catch calls when you are out. STEP #19 CHECK OUT THE POST OFFICE & UPS Using a post office box as the business address down plays the fact you are home-based. It also prevents customers from dropping in at all hours. While looking into box rental, ask for information on the various postal rates, particularly bulk rate, if you plan to do large or specialized mailings. If you mail many packages, check out United Parcel Service (UPS), as it is less expensive than the Post Office. STEP #20 PURCHASE THE NECESSARY INSURANCE Check with your homeowners insurance agent about a rider for your existing policy or the need for a separate business policy. Also make sure you have adequate personal and product liability coverage. Shop around, as each company has different rules regarding home businesses To save money on medical insurance, join an association and participate in their group plan. STEP #21 ORGANIZE THE HOUSE & YOURSELF To have more time for business, organize and simplify household routines. Start by holding a garage sale to get rid of unnecessary possessions. Next, have a family conference and divide household duties, making sure each person does his or her part. The, set up a planning notebook to keep track of appointments, things to do, calls to make, errands to run, shopping, etc. Finally, set up a work schedule so you won’t get sidetracked by TV, neighbor’s visits, snacking, and telephone calls. What’s the best way for your child to be safe, have fun and beat the summer heat? Sign them up for a water sports camp!

Summertime and aquatic activities go hand-in-hand. According to Theresa Torrone, a volunteer for the American Camp Association (ACA), “Water sports camps are one of the fastest growing segments of the specialty camp field within the summer camp industry as a whole. There’s a water sports camp for kids and teens of all ages no matter where you live.”

Also known as aquatics sports camps, water sports camps generally offer surfing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, boogie boarding, body surfing, parasailing, swimming, inner-tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating and related activities.

What if your child doesn’t have previous experience with these activities? Torrone says not to worry.

“Most water sports camps accept kids from every aquatic background, so your child can participate and enjoy the activities safely and have fun no matter what.” To cover your bets, however, Torrone says to “always check with the camp director first.”

Sometimes parents think a water sports camp is out of the question if they don’t live close to the ocean. But Torrone says your kids can still get the full benefit of attending a water sports camp no matter where you live.

“Some of the premier water sports camps in the country use lakes, reservoirs and pools as their primary activity base. The ocean is fun, but it’s definitely not essential to enjoying a premier water sports camp experience. For example, jet skiing, wakeboarding and fishing camps often take place at lakes or rivers. They don’t require a beach or ocean for kids to have fun.”

When asked about surfing camps, Torrone said, “I suppose if you want to learn to surf or attend a surf camp, you’ll need to find a water sports camp near the beach. But even if you don’t live by the beach, you can still go to an overnight surf camp. There are a number of them across the country.”

To find a list of water sports camps, Torrone suggests contacting the American Camp Association.

Everyone knows the basics of fishing. There’s a rod, reel, fishing line, hook, bait; you cast the line, wait for a bite, and reel in your dinner. Experienced fishermen know there is more to it than that, but for most of us that description appropriately sums it up. However, there are many types of fishing, such as salt water and fresh water, and perhaps the most artful of them all, fly fishing. You have probably heard of fly fishing – it has been in recorded history for nearly 2000 years – and you probably know that it does not involve fishing for flies, but if that is all you know then a primer in fly fishing basics can bring you up to speed.

Unlike other forms of fishing, fly fishing does not typically use any kind of organic bait, live or dead. Instead, fly fisherman use artificial flies – ribbon, string, hair, feathers – as a lure to attract fish. The artificial flies are attached to the hook and line, and the fisherman attracts fish with movement that makes the fly look like an insect that is moving on or above the surface of the water. The nature of that artificial bait is the first and most important element to understand when examining fly fishing basics.

Another aspect of fly fishing basics, an aspect that separates fly fishing from most other variations of fishing, is the way the line is cast. Other kinds of fishing rely on casting a line and attracting fish with the bait, but fly fishing requires a much more skillful method of luring the fish. One common mistake new bloggers make is not realizing that managing a blog is similar to publishing a magazine. Your blog, to be successful, requires constant planning, research, analysis, and then more planning. You have to keep on top of your topic niche, but this means different things for different people.

For example, if you are blogging about something you do everyday, and are offering “how-to” type of info, then you may not need to do a lot of reading to keep on top of your topic. On the other hand, if you are writing about new products in your industry, unless you are creating these products yourself, you will probably have to do regular research to keep up.

I write several blogs that fall into different categories. For my computer programming blogs, I draw on my experience in a particular computer language and generally do not need to do any research, unless I want to blog about new software and tools. These programming blogs, however, take a great deal of effort, and any code I write has to be tested. The time investment per article is equal to or more than I spend on “research” blogs.

For product-related blogs, I have to do regular, intense research. I use Google Alerts (http://google.com/alerts) to have snippets of web or blog pages delivered to my email on a daily basis. Google Alerts lets you type in a few keywords and your email address, along with a delivery frequency (weekly, daily, as-it-happens). I get updates on several keywords nightly. They’re a boon to my research, but if I fall too far behind in checking the alerts, the resulting giant to-read list can get intimidating. (By the way, Yahoo! and MSN have similar services.)

What I do with the alerts is skim over them. If a snippet interests me, I’ll click on the link to visit the source web page and read the full story. I try to read several stories on the same topic, then summarize all of them into one short article, add links to the source stories, and add my own spin to the topic, either supporting or refuting what is being said in the stories. Adding your own spin is essential, as it is your opportunity to add your own personality – which is usually more evident in your original blog entries. Anyone can write a summary; make that summary yours.

With blogs that document my experience on a topic, I try to think about what I know now that would have helped me when I was starting out. Someone out there can do with your guidance. Providing this guidance in a blog is an excellent way to build rapport with readers. I feel that anyone can do this, regardless of what type of business you are in. But there are some questions you have to ask yourself, and which you should answer before you start blogging:

  • Why are you blogging? Are you essentially trying to sell products and services (either online or offline), or showcasing your experience for some other reason? I blog for several reasons:
    • I love to write.
    • I can earn advertising money.
    • I have a number of e-books that I’m writing, which I eventually hope to promote via some of my blogs.
    • I showcase my blogs for small business owners who want to see what a blog for their industry may look like. For example, I have a couple of potential clients who are small- to medium-sized merchants that sell antiques or home decor and fashion. I’ve set up an example blog for them to view the possibilities.
    • I showcase my experience on a topic, in order to gain contracts for website or blog architecting, design, or technical writing.


  • Who are you writing for? My blogs are each targeted to different people. Even though several of them are showcases that exist in hopes of getting me contracts, they are written as any magazine on the same topic might be. For example, my antiques/ home decor blog is written for anyone who has an interest in such. In this case, I’m targeted buyers, not dealers. But the way I’ve set it up, my intent is to attract dealers to eventually write articles. My blog about spinning blogs is aimed at both people who write only one blog and those who write, or want to write, several blogs. I have to achieve a balance in my articles to cater to both types of readers.

  • Who is going to write the blog entries? If you are the sole proprietor of the business you are promoting and have no employees, this will have to be you, as no one else knows your business as well as you do. If you have employees, you might have them participate: you sketch out ideas, they finish the articles. Or if your employees don’t have sufficient writing skills, you might consider an intern who wants to learn your business.

  • Who is responsible for the quality of the content? Someone has to take on the role of editor. Ultimately, as a business owner, you should “own” the content. If the blog is promoting your business, it must maintain credibility, otherwise that will reflect badly on your business. But in reality, someone has to edit the content, especially if you are not the writer or if there are multiple writers. If your business is large enough to have a marketing department, they are the most likely “owners” of the blog. Otherwise, the task of editor may fall to you. Some blogmasters-for-hire will assume the role of editor.

  • Who will be the blogmaster? This is a hybrid task, falling partway between marketing and partway between (technical) webmastering. It includes managing the blog, posting of entries, optimizing content for the Search Engines, and analysis of blog traffic. Blogmastering is yet another task you will probably have to add to your own to-do list. However, some bloggers out there will help you manage a blog, typically for a monthly fee, or for a retainer plus a per-post fee. These fees may include promotion as well as analysis of incoming web/ blog traffic. The latter is crucial; geo-targeting is essential to businesses which have geographical differences or limitations. For example, if you run a local business, but are finding that much of your web traffic is coming from another state or even another country, you may want to re-think your blog strategy. (Example below.)

  • With what frequency will entries be posted? Typically, it’s wise to post entries two or more times a day, at least 5 days a week – although there are “weekly” blogs. Your blog entries do not always have to be large articles, and can often be summaries of other blogs or their articles, a list of resources, a few helpful hints, or relevant tips on saving money. However, every once in a while, you should write a longer article. To place higher in the Search Engines, your entries should be at least 75 words in length, when possible. Note that if your business is purely regional, and is unlikely to interest anyone outside of a certain geographical radius, blogging may not be as effective for you. In that case , you may want to set up a portal blog and invite other business owners from across the country/ continent/ world to participate. The “helpful hints” entries are of interest to all readers, but a region-specific blog entry could link to the writer’s own business website. Keep in mind that the synergy gained from multiple points of view has proven itself in terms of web traffic on various blog networks. There is also less onus on a single writer to blog everyday, and the increased number of total daily blog contributions is likely to draw more blog traffic than for several small regionally-based blogs.

These are just a few of the questions you have to answer. I recommend that before you set up your blog, you also write at least 10 entries to get a feel for things. Starting up and maintaining a blog, on top of your daily business commitments, is a lot of work. It’s your public face on the Internet – more so than a regular website – and you want to maintain credibility. So plan your blog well.

In my article Establishing Credibility and Trust with Testimonials, I addressed the importance of offering proof to your prospects and how testimonials are one of the most powerful tools you can implement in your arsenal of marketing.

In that article, I discussed the value of testimonials from satisfied customers, probably the most credible and effective type of testimonial because nothing beats a testimonial from a satisfied customer.

I would now like to focus on another very powerful form of testimonials: celebrity endorsements.

In America, traditionally major celebrities have been reluctant to appear in widespread advertising campaigns on the assumption that it might tarnish their reputation professionally. In Asia, however, where I have extensive experience in the advertising industry, it is much more common to see famous actors in commercial advertisements.

In China, for example, celebrity endorsements have proven very successful where, due to increasing consumerism, it is considered a status symbol to purchase an endorsed product or service. In my former advertising agency, we often used top Hong Kong celebrities to great advantage promoting products in China.

However it is Japan, where Japanese advertising budgets are typically much more extravagant than American budgets when it comes to celebrity talent that has attracted many major American celebrities with lucrative endorsement deals together with a much lower risk of negative publicity.

I can remember very well traveling to Japan often in the 1980′s and 1990′s seeing many of Hollywood’s A-list actors secretly providing product endorsements in the Land of the Rising Sun. For decades, the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford and even earlier Steve McQueen, have accepted lucrative Japanese advertising endorsement deals in exchange for many millions, all without tarnishing their reputations at home.

The major benefits of celebrity endorsements are:

Celebrities add instant credibility: Consciously or unconsciously, the consumer believes that if a celebrity is using this product, service or brand, the company who makes it must be quality.

Celebrities grab attention: Having a celebrity endorse a product, service or brand creates attention. Consumers are more apt to watch an ad if it has a celebrity.

Celebrities provide superior market presence: It is usually easier to get a product in stores and more prominently displayed because retailers have preferences for celebrity endorsed products.

Celebrities lead to enhanced media exposure: The media recognizes the publics’ strong interest in celebrities and it’s much easier to get free publicity if products are used by celebrities. Customers are more apt to participate in events when a celebrity involved.

However, before any company signs on a celebrity to promote their product or service, they should very carefully consider the following:

The celebrity’s attractiveness: Generally an attractive endorser will have a positive impact. The celebrity should be attractive to the target audience in such aspects as physical appearance, intelligence, athleticism, lifestyle, etc.

The celebrity’s credibility: For any brand-celebrity collaboration to be successful, the endorser’s personal credibility and believability in terms of perceived expertise and trustworthiness is crucial and greatly influences acceptance with consumers. Furthermore, celebrity endorsements only work when the consumer has a credible belief that the celebrity would really be interested in buying and using your product or service despite being paid to do so. If not, you are probably wasting your money on the endorsement.

The celebrity’s and the brand’s compatibility: The success of the brand-celebrity collaboration depends significantly on the compatibility between the brand and the celebrity in terms of lifestyle, identity, personality, and positioning. The best endorsement deals manage to equate the product with the appeal of the celebrity. One of the best and most successful examples is Air Jordan with the collaboration between Michael Jordan and Nike

One final point: Never forget that a celebrity is not a replacement for a good product, service or idea.

First, when you want to arrange a child’s room, you need to take account of age, personality and desires. The room will have to evolve as the years pass, especially if you do not plan to move elsewhere. So, it would be wise not to give into the urge to buy a bed in the shape of a car, boat or princess palace, because when your baby grows, you will have to buy another one. The best thing would be to buy classic furniture and try to play around with the details – the curtains, linens, bedding, wall colour etc.

Imagine a child’s bedroom: in the first period of a babies life (the first few weeks) it will sleep more than it is awake, the waking periods are rare. So the first object to which we refer is the child’s cot. May people prefer to go with a Moses basket for the first few months, but really it will only last a short while and there is no reason a baby can not go straight into a cot with tends to last until a child is 2-3 years old. Because it can be quiet sleep, the mattress must be of a material that allows the child’s body relaxation, easy to maintain (to allow periodic cleaning) and to fit perfectly in the bed (which can be wood, iron or plastic). The cot/bed, here are other issues that we must bear in mind: the child needs protection against air currents but needs air and natural light. In the first months of life a babies movements are small, for the older children, starting from month 3, you can expect it to change its position during sleep. Not to mention the baby who begins to twist from the belly or back, being curious, wanting to see what is beyond the bed, will try to get up. To meet the needs of the child, but also to guard against risks of accidents, bed bars must be sufficiently thin (in order to be grasped by the child’s hand) and a suitable distance apart ( to avoid situations in which a foot can get caught between the bars of his bed… or worse, his head to get stuck among them.)

So far, we referred to as the bed. Consider that, especially in the first few weeks of your child’s life, you will spend a lot of time near it (to see how he sleeps, if he smiles in his sleep, if the bed should be bigger. Also, the baby’s bed should be a convenient height (one side of the cot can be lowered down to allow easier access to the baby). Cots are also available where the mattress can be adjusted to different heights, ensuring that the baby is unable to climb out or over the bars.

Once you have the bed or cot you can arrange a room specially designed for the newest member of your family. There are various hypotheses that come to support the importance of colour on our mental state. But you just use your imagination, you don’t have to stick to the traditional pink, blue, beige or yellows. In choosing the colour of the baby’s room, keep in mind that it will be full of toys, and clothes. If a child’s room is an explosion of strong colours, it will be overstimulated and the effect could be reversed than expected: less interest in it’s toys.

Some parents, especially those with their first child, don’t ask themselves all these questions, often they do what comes naturally to them: the child must sleep where the mother sleeps.

The child grows up as you educate him so he must know he has his own space and privacy. A resolution of this need to constantly supervise can be shown by the parent’s room. As baby grows, the crib can be moved to the nursery. But then parents will be helping the baby (with love and, remember, be firm) to get used to his new room. This doesn’t mean that he should “forget” the way to his parents room, but must understand that while he has to respect the privacy of his parents, he is also entitled to his privacy.

In the nursery, the temperature must be constant and to fall between 16-20 ° C. Therefore, you should have a thermometer (there thermometers in various forms, which cheer up the room).

So I think of moments when the mother is nursing. It is a moment full of emotional exchanges between mother and child. The child learns at his mother’s breast and smiles. Or if the father keeps his bottle, he learns to distinguish between the mother and the father’s voice. The child may fall asleep by the voice of his parents, while listening to a story. And it would be a shame for him if these moments were cut short because the parent was sitting in an uncomfortable chair. As a result, the child’s room must always have a place for a small chair or a rocking chair.

What about the other baby furniture items? Baby clothes can be placed in a sideboard with drawers closed, or on some open shelves. Remember that your baby grows and, within a few moths begins to crawl which endangers the neat, open shelves! This is why you choose overhead racks which, later can be used as shelves for books and toys. True, there are specialty stores the changing tables, and countertops with the bath tub and have drawers for everything. You can also choose this option, but that will not be used in the first period of childhood and the child will quickly outgrow the fancy bath tub and changing table.

For the dirty laundry you can use small wicker baskets with lids. (No nappies in here though!). Baskets have a cheerful air, and after a while, these may be placed alongside those of his older brothers or sisters where they can all store their toys. If you are using disposable nappies, plastic buckets, with lids are ideal! They are easy to use and easy to sterilise.

A high chair is ideal for meals, but I see it in the kitchen, where the family sits around the table. But initially, the high chair may stay in the nursery. The seat itself must support the child and have straps for safety, but that do not inhibit the baby’s movements or to prevent him from eating. Remember that each meal is a new experience for your child!

In my mind, the true history of tennis does not begin until the 1850′s, when the first “modern” tennis balls were invented and used. Before this point, the history of tennis is the history of a completely different game – “real tennis.”

Real tennis is played on indoor courts. In fact, real tennis cannot be played outside – the players use the angled walls of a real tennis court to strategically hit and return the ball to their opponents. Yes, real tennis his very similar to today’s modern tennis, or “lawn tennis,” but only in the same way that handball, badminton, croquet, and racquetball are similar to lawn tennis!

That is why I choose to start my history of tennis at the point in which lawn tennis diverged from real tennis, and this happened in the 1850′s. It was in the 1850′s that Charles Goodyear, of Goodyear tire fame, invented vulcanized rubber. Vulcanized rubber is a process that prevents natural rubber from deteriorating so quickly (without the vulcanization process, natural rubber could deteriorate within just a few days.)

So, with the vulcanization of rubber came rubber tennis balls. The rubber tennis balls could be used outdoors on lawn courts. These rubber tennis balls were a nice change from the wads of wool, hair, wool, or cork wrapped in leather or string and cloth – these are what had been used in real tennis.

And because these vulcanized rubber tennis balls could be used outdoors, on lawn courts, without walls to bounce them off of, new rules had to be invented for this new game of lawn tennis.

Walter Clopton Wingfield is usually the man who is given credit for the invention of modern tennis, or lawn tennis. Around 1874, Wingfield actually patented the game. And the game became popular among the leisured classes throughout the end of the 1800s.

The popularity of tennis spread relatively quickly. Tennis clubs were set up around this time. The first tennis championships were held in 1877 in Wimbledon… a precursor to the Grand Slam tournament held in Wimbledon every year, even today.

The rules of tennis changed gradually throughout the later 1800s, changing the shape of the court and the height of net and thereby changing the history of tennis in the process!

So, as you can see, it makes sense that I choose to start the real history of tennis around the 1850′s when Charles Goodyear’s invention of vulcanized rubber made modern tennis possible.

The Dallas tennis community is one of the most active in the US. The city offers a variety courts, public recreational facilities, public parks, private country clubs, racket clubs, and hotel resorts. In addition the Dallas tennis players have excellent opportunity to experience the game in multiple fun or competitive activities such as adult and junior tennis programs, private lessons, drills or leagues. This article provides information about some of the popular Dallas tennis facilities. If you are looking for tennis in Dallas, or if you are interested improving your game by meeting new competitors, this article can point you in the right direction.

There are many tennis courts in Dallas to choose from and many places for Dallas tennis lessons. If you are looking for a larger tennis Dallas tennis club you might want to check out private facilities such as T Bar M Racket Club or Brookhaven Country Club. These are by far the two most prominent and popular Dallas Tennis clubs in the Metroplex. Both are full service tennis facilities that have indoor and outdoor courts as well as programs to the tennis players of all ages and levels.

T Bar M Racket Club is located at Dilbeck and Preston Road, just a half a mile north off of 635. Each of these two clubs has over 20 well trained and seasoned teaching pro’s. Sectors of T Bar M Racket Club include a wellness center, massage rooms, outdoor basketball court, pool, and in indoor bar and dining area. T Bar M Racket Club hosts the Men’s Dallas Tennis Challenger every year in the beginning of February where profession players compete from all over the world.

Brookhaven Country Club is located in Farmers Branch, Texas and has 22 outdoor tennis courts and 16 indoor courts. Brookhaven is known for a strong junior development program and has about 20 pros on staff at all times. Brookhaven Country Club has a solid foundation that is run by Club Corp, which operates a bunch of golf courses, country clubs, and private business clubs around the country. This is a Great Dallas tennis club for junior development training and a highly recommended Dallas tennis club to join if you love the sport.

There are other clubs that have a solid following such as Canyon Creek Country Club which is located on the boarder of Richardson and Plano. This club is also operated by Club Corp and has 18 outdoor tennis courts to play on along with 4 indoor courts. Canyon Creek Country Club hosts Texas Open every year in the late summer and has been around since 1963.

Glen Eagles Country Club is another highly prestigious country club located in west Plano that operates 18 courts and is operated by Club Corp. There are about 10 teaching pros that cater to all levels of skill and hold a variety of programs for juniors and adults to select from.

The Village Tennis Center in located in Dallas and is has 12 outdoor tennis courts made of hard court and has a full service pro shop. The facility is operated by U.S.P.T.A. instructors that offer training for every type of player. This is a very popular location for Dallas Tennis tournaments to be held at. The Village Tennis Center is a prime spot for lessons, mixers, and leagues for those who love the sport.

As far as the Dallas public tennis courts that are operated by the cities, there are few that are stronger than others but most of them contain about 15 courts on average. L.B. Houston Tennis center is owned by the City of Dallas and has a complete pro shop inside along with 16 tennis courts. L. B Houston Tennis Center is a great facility for joining a league, booking private lessons, or competing in the Dallas tennis tournaments.

Fretz Tennis Center on Hillcrest at Beltline Road in North Dallas right next to the public library has always been a very popular location for Dallas tennis leagues as well as junior development, and private lesson. This location also has a recreational center that has a basketball court and outdoor pool.

Samuel Grand Tennis Center located in East Dallas is just outside of downtown and it is known as the largest public Dallas tennis center that has 20 out courts, and also provides private tennis lessons, programs and host a number of Texas tennis tournaments throughout the year.

Keist Tennis Center in Oak Cliff another public tennis facility that is run by the Kick Serve Tennis Group and offers private lessons for all age levels. Keist Tennis Center is a great facility with 16 courts and has holds a variety of state tennis tournaments every year. Keist facilitates Dallas tennis leagues such as TCD which known as the Texas Competitors of Dallas, and it is another fine location to sign up for programs, drills, and private lessons.

Fair Oaks Tennis is located in the heart of Dallas and holds a variety programs for juniors and adults of all ages. Fair Oaks hosts many Dallas tennis tournaments throughout the year on their 16 courts and is very active amongst the Dallas Tennis community.

If you are an adult and you are thinking of joining Dallas tennis league than you might want to consider joining the Tennis Competitors of Dallas. The Tennis Competitors of Dallas also known as TCD is specifically designed for league match play against different clubs and city communities that meet at numerous locations to battle it out. So you’ve decided to start a blog? You’ve written a few entries, but it’s not getting the responses and feedback you expected when you decided to take the initial plunge. You don’t want to give up, but quite honestly you can’t understand just why blogs are such a big deal. What’s all the fuss about? And why does everyone talk about blogs in such reverent, awed tones?

The word blog is an abbreviation for Web Log. Described as an online diary, a blog gives its writer the freedom to express his or her personal thoughts and opinions to what is potentially the biggest audience in the world. The freedom and accessibility of the Internet means that anyone in the world can access any blog at any time. Theoretically a blog has the potential to be read by more people than any best selling book. It’s a disturbing, yet exhilarating thought.

Blogs are virtually the ultimate soapbox, and the true success of a blog depends on how the writer wants to reach his or her readers. There are a number of different ways in which to write a blog, and the content supplied needs to be considered according to the audience you want to reach. There are many different kinds of blogs, and I’ve selected the ones I feel most relevant to a personal blogger.

Some of the most popular blogs are cultural. These attract a wide audience, and discuss different cultural activities, ranging from sports to theatre and films. One way to use a cultural blog is to write a book or film review, or share the experience of attending a live concert. Imagine being able to share the experience of attending a concert given by a popular entertainer like Madonna with readers from all over the world. Imagine being able to compare your concert experience with people on continents who have seen the same show. That’s why cultural blogs are so popular.

A topical blog is more specific, in that it focuses on a niche market. Local blogs, covering events in a neighbourhood, a town or a city fit this description. The people living in the specific area featured in the blog are actual participants to all events and happenings in the blog. Another type of a topical blog is one that covers a specific subject rather than a physical area. For example: a patient living with cancer can share many aspects of the condition with readers. He can share his daily feelings as he undergoes treatment and the reactions of his family and friends with readers who may have the same medical dilemma. Organizations covering human rights abuses in a specific country can blog about their findings, making people all over the world aware of the situation in which they’re working. On a lighter note pet owners have written blogs from their pet’s point of view, allowing their animal to narrate the entries. Animal lovers all over the world can contribute and share their own experiences with their owners in a light hearted, humorous style.

A political blog is dependent upon the media and the news, and the blogger will combine personal observations with links to other blogs and articles on the Internet. A more serious politician will feature his or her own beliefs and comments, with links to supporting blogs and media articles. Political blogs can inspire fierce and enthusiastic debates among readers, which makes them extremely diverse and interesting. A warblog focuses upon news event about an ongoing war or military action, although these types of blogs have been accused of supporting war rather than remaining neutral.

Perhaps the most common type of blog is the personal one. Popular with students and those wanting to share their experiences with family and friends, entries are usually written in a personal diary format. Although growing in popularity, it’s more difficult to attract large reader numbers to this kind of blog. For example: a student living in a country in Africa will probably not bookmark a blog written by someone from a country like Scotland. The cultural and environmental differences between the two are significantly diverse. Another consideration is how long can diary entries about family and friend’s activities hold anyone’s attention if he’s never met them – and isn’t likely to anytime in the future?

If the writer pays attention to each entry, applying good grammar, humour and writing in a style that makes readers want to know more about the featured characters there’s a chance a few may return. However part of the appeal of this blog is the personal approach, and there’s a very real risk of losing the chance to build on the interaction between a crowd of people who have a physical connection rather than one formed in cyberspace. The best approach in this instance would be to write each blog entry as though it’s a chapter in a book about the characters.

Personal blogs can be used in other ways too. Some people use an entry to write a poem, a chapter in a novel or a short story. Others will debate their religious, political or other beliefs. Some will write about their thoughts and feelings on current news items, others may use them to describe personal feelings during a crisis, such as coping with an illness or death of a loved one. In this instance writing the blog becomes a cathartic experience, and the support of readers can help the writer cope with a deep, personal issue or crisis.

As most blogs are personal there are a number of ways in which the blogger can maintain and possible increase his or her audience.

Be Diverse – vary your entries every day. Share an anecdote about a friend or family member in one entry, then follow it with a story about your pet. If you’ve read an interesting story on the news dedicate an entry to it. Share a joke you received on an email from a friend. You could write a book review or share your thoughts on a film or DVD you’ve just watched. Think Forrest Gump: Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get.

Be Candid – be truthful, frank and straightforward. Know your facts. If you’re commenting on a topical story or issue research your facts before committing them to the blog. Explain the reasoning for your beliefs, and back them with proven facts.

Be Neutral – don’t scorn, condemn or criticise those who disagree with your beliefs. Accept that everyone’s entitled to his or her opinion. It’s an idea to reflect both sides of the argument in an entry, taking care to avoid criticising or berating others. That’s the basis of democracy, and it’s a good point to remember when debating a “hot” issue in a blog.

Be Friendly – acknowledge those who take the time to read and contribute to your blog. If someone’s left a comment in your blog with a return email or blog address, send a message. Or better still pay a visit to the relevant blog. It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. The visitor may tell others about your blog, and their visits will increase your blog’s popularity – not to mention your viewing statistics!

Be Entertaining – use your sense of humour, don’t take yourself too seriously. Sharing thoughts, ideas and experiences in writing is the same as sitting in a room with a group of friends. Just because you cannot see their faces doesn’t mean they’re not like you. Your blogging friends are special people, who’ve taken the time to respond to your words. Share some of yourself with them, and you’ll find your blogging circle grows.

A blog is a powerful communicative tool, and it needs to be handled properly. A well written, interesting blog has the ability to be read by people from all over the world. There are now more than 60 million blogs on the Internet, and that number is increasing daily. Self publishing house Lulu recently announced the winner of the inaugural Blooker Prize. Julie Powell wrote a blog about her attempts to cook all the recipes in an old French cookery book. Her blog was turned into a blook and to date she’s sold 100,000 copies.

Now that’s food for thought! Who knows what direction your blog will take in the future?

Understanding Fats…

While cooking oils are pure fat, they are not created equal. All cooking oils are a combination of saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. It is the concentration of hydrogen that determines how they are categorized. Without getting too technical, the following information will hopefully provide a basic understanding of fats.

Saturated Fats:

Saturated fats are found in animal products and are converted into cholesterol by the liver. Butter, margarine, meats and dairy products are especially high in saturated fat. Saturated fat will elevate blood cholesterol levels and is associated with increased rates of heart disease and stroke. It is solid at room temperature.

Unsaturated Fats:

There are two types of unsaturated fats: monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats do not raise blood cholesterol levels. Canola and olive oils contain the highest proportion of monounsaturated fat when compared with other cooking oils. Safflower and corn oil are the highest in polyunsaturated fats.

Trans Fats:

Trans fats are man-made or processed fats, which are made from a liquid oil. When hydrogen is added to liquid vegetable oil and pressure is added, the result is a stiffer fat, like the fat found in a can of Crisco. Trans fats are also called hydrogenated fats and are found in margarine and trans fat partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Trans fats pose a greater risk of heart disease than saturated fats (which were once believed to be the worst kind of fats). While it is true that saturated fats (found in butter, cheese, beef, coconut and palm oil) raise total cholesterol levels, trans fats not only raise total cholesterol levels, they also deplete good cholesterol (HDL), which helps protect against heart disease.

Partially Hydrogenated Fats:

If you have health concerns, read food labels to see if they list “partially hydrogenated oil” as an ingredient. Partially hydrogenated oils are present in all commercially made donuts, crackers, cookies, pastries, deep-fat fried foods (including those from all major fast-food chains), potato and corn chips, imitation cheeses, and confectionery fats found in frosting and candies. All of these products contain unsaturated fats which can be damaged at high temperatures and converted to a trans fat.

Understanding the Difference between Refined and Unrefined Cooking Oils…

Refined Oils:

Refined oils are extracted by solvent extraction for further refining in order to produce clear oil that is free from rancidity and foreign matter. These oils are used as medium cooking oils (225°F to 350°F), high cooking oils (350°F to 450°F) and deep frying oils (greater than 450°F). Refined oils are bland and pale. They have negligible flavor and aroma which makes them ideal for preparing delicately flavored dishes. Use for baking, sauteing, stir-fry and wok cooking, baking, searing, browning, deep-frying and pan-frying.

Unrefined Oils:

Unrefined oils are processed by cold-pressed and expeller-pressed methods. They carry the true flavor of the plant from which the oil is made. The strong flavor of unrefined oils may overwhelm the dish or baked good that is prepared with them; however, strong flavor is not always undesirable and some unrefined oils are used as flavoring agents. (Generally, when there is a strong natural flavor and aroma, there is a higher amount of nutritional value.) These oils are typically called salad oils and are used for salad dressings, marinades, sauces and as light cooking oils for light sautes and low heat baking. As a general rule, they should not be cooked at high temperatures. (The one exception is unrefined safflower oil which is capable of reaching a temperature necessary for deep-frying.) Unrefined oils should not be used at temperatures above 320°F.

Various Cooking Oils and Recommended Use…

Some oils have low smoke points, which means that they will burn at low temperatures. These oils, typically called salad oils, are best used for salad dressings, marinades, sauces and as light cooking oils for light sautes and low heat baking. Other cooking oils have a high smoke point, which means that they can reach higher temperatures without smoking. These particular oils are ideal for deep-frying, pan-frying and sauteing. The information below will discuss various types of cooking oils and their recommended use.

  • Canola – Canola oil is a monounsaturated oil extracted from the seeds of a plant in the mustard family. It has a mild flavor and aroma and is most commonly available in a refined form. It has a bland flavor and is recommended for deep-frying, pan-frying, sauteing, baking and preparing salad dressings. Its mild flavor and relatively high smoke point (400°F) make refined canola oil a good all-purpose oil. Of all the cooking oils, canola has the least amount of saturated fat (6%) and is the least expensive.
  • Corn – Made from the germ of the corn kernel, corn oil is almost tasteless and is high in polyunsaturated fat (62%). It is used to make margarine, salad dressings and mayonnaise. With a smoke point of 450°F, it is excellent for pan-frying and deep-frying because it can withstand high temperatures without smoking.
  • Olive – Olive oil is a monounsaturated oil extracted from tree-ripened olives. The color may range from light amber to green with flavors that range from bland to extremely strong. Olive oil is graded according to its degree of acidity and the process used to extract the oil. Oil labeled “virgin” is cold pressed (a process using no heat or chemicals) and contains low levels of acidity. It provides the body with vitamins E and F. Oil labeled “pure” uses heat and chemicals to process olive residue from subsequent pressings. Unrefined olive oil has a smoke point of 320°F and is recommended for baking, sauteing, stir-frying and wok cooking.
  • Peanut – Made from pressed, steam-cooked peanuts, peanut oil contains 18% saturated fat. It has a bland flavor and is good for cooking because it doesn’t absorb or transfer flavors. Frying with peanut oil gives foods a rich, nutty, roasted flavor. Refined peanut oil has a smoke point of 450°F and is recommended for stir-frying, wok cooking, pan-frying and deep-frying.
  • Safflower – Made from safflower seeds, safflower oil is pale yellow and almost flavorless. It has more polyunsaturated fat that other oils (78%) but lacks vitamin E. It is considered a good, all-purpose cooking oil. Safflower oil is a favorite for salads because it does not solidify when chilled. Refined safflower oil has a smoke point of 450°F and is recommended for deep-frying, pan-frying, sauteing and baking.
  • Sesame – Made from pressed sesame seeds, sesame oil is high in polyunsaturated fat (43%) and monounsaturated fat (42%). It comes in two varieties, light and dark. Light sesame oil is made with untoasted sesame seeds and has a nutty flavor. It is especially good for stir-frying, wok cooking and preparing dressings. Dark sesame oil (Asian) is made with toasted sesame seeds and has a much stronger flavor than light sesame oil. It should only be used in small quantities for flavoring foods; it is not suitable for cooking. Refined sesame oil has a smoke point of 350°F and semirefined sesame oil has a smoke point of 450°F.
  • Soybean – Highly refined soybean oil is reasonably priced, very mild, versatile and it represents approximately 80% of all the cooking oils used in commercial food production in the USA. Almost any product that lists vegetable oil as an ingredient most likely contains refined soybean oil. With a smoke point of 450°F, soybean oil is a good, all-purpose oil. Use for deep-frying, pan-frying, wok cooking, stir-frying and baking.
  • Sunflower – Made from sunflower seeds, sunflower oil is pale yellow in color, has a bland flavor and is considered a good, all-purpose oil. It is low in saturated fat and high in polyunsaturated fat. Semirefined sunflower oil has a smoke point of 450°F and is excellent for sauteing, preparing salad dressings, deep-frying and pan-frying.
  • Vegetable – Vegetable oil is an inexpensive, all-purpose oil which is a blend of refined oils made from vegetables, nuts and seeds. Most vegetable oils are made from soybeans and are high in monounsaturated fat, high in polyunsaturated fat and low in saturated fat. Designed to have a mild flavor and a high smoke point, it is recommended for deep-frying, pan-frying, sauteing and baking.

    Note: The American Heart Association Cookbook, Fifth Edition, recommends all of the above cooking oils with the exception of peanut oil due to its high saturated fat content.

  • Essential fatty acids are vital for good health. Without some fats in our diets, we cannot absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
  • All cooking oils contain 100% fat.
  • A tablespoon of cooking oil contains 14 grams of fat.
  • All cooking oils contain the same number of calories – one tablespoon contains 120 calories.
  • For better health, choose oils/fats that are low in saturated fat.
  • Cooking oil used for deep-frying can usually be reused several times. Wait until the oil has cooled completely before handling then strain it into a clean sealable container for storing.
  • The most accurate method of testing the temperature of oil for deep-frying is a deep-fat thermometer. Make sure the bulb of your thermometer is completely immersed in the oil, but not touching the bottom of the pan. Otherwise, the reading could be affected. If a deep-fat thermometer is not available, the age-old method of dropping a square of bread into the hot oil will suffice. If the bread cube rises to the surface crackling and frying, the oil’s hot enough.

    Rule of thumb when using this method – If the bread cube browns uniformly in:

    60 seconds, the temperature is 350-365°F

    40 seconds, the temperature is about 365-382°F

    20 seconds, the temperature is about 382-390°F


  • To dispose of used cooking oil, carefully pour cooled oil into a strong sealable container, such as an old plastic jar with a lid or old coffee can. (Avoid using breakable glass jars.) If the amount of oil is small, place the filled, sealed jar in the trash. Dispose of large amounts of cooking oil by taking it to the local landfill.
  • Do not pour cooking oil down the kitchen drain. Even small amounts will eventually clog the plumbing.
  • Remember to always wait until cooking oil has cooled completely before handling.
